Ascot Vale Church destroyed by fire

An 1897 church on Maribrynong Road in Moonee Ponds has been destroyed in a confirmed arson attack early on Sunday morning, August 29.
The Presbyterian church was build in 1896 to the design of Hillson, Beasley and Little. The high Victorian building featured a symmetrical design of ornate polychrome brickwork and prominent twin tourelles and spectacular stained glass. It once featured one of Victoria’s finest church organs, built in 1904.

The building was completely gutted and structurally unsound.

Although the church has vowed to rebuild, the damage was estimated in the millions and sadly it is unlikely that any of the historical elements be retained.

Why anyone would want to deliberately destroy such a stunning building is beyond me.
