Flinders Street Station’s Derelict Ballroom Becomes Art

It comes as no suprise to me that French artists are fascinated enough by Flinders Street Station’s derelict ballroom (which has been neglected by the State Government and Connex for years) to use it as an artistic subject.

If the station was in Europe, it would be appreciated, restored and admired. Here in Australia, sadly that is another story. Sadly most Australians do not appreciate architecture, even though ironically many travel the world to look at buildings cultural cringe tends to push our own heritage and sense of identity to the periphery.

The good news is that the exhibition is at the magnificently restored Eildon Mansion in Grey Street in St Kilda home to the Alliance Francaise. It runs for a couple of months.

Fire damages the St Kilda RSL

An electrical fire damaged several floors of the St Kilda RSL on Acland Street during a recent blackout. The building is of heritage significance to St Kilda. Fortunately fire fighters prevented the blaze from engulfing the building and the art deco ceilings and interiors have been fully repaired.
