Princes Pier, Port Melbourne

According to the Caulfield Glen Eira Leader, Princes Pier will lose its royal title to be renamed in memory of Alan Whitaker, a wharfie murdered in 1928 during the great strike.

Another $20 million has been allocated to the refurbishment project which includes the $14 million restoration of the pier buildings (pictured).

i remember in 1964 arriving in Melbourne and looking over the edge of our Ship to the big green buildings coming up towards us.As an emmigrant to the shores of Melbourne it was quite daunting to see this especially as a child of 10. Princess Pier was the hub of activity when the ships docked from the Uk and around the world. i can also visualise the drama of Station Pier new arrivals checking for luggage trying to understand the lingo all strange exciting and adventurous to a young naive child who thought this was a great holiday still here 45 years later.
